Dogs left at the Sanctuary and Correcting Misinformation.

There are ten dogs left at the Taos Mesa Animal Sanctuary site according to what I’ve been told. These dogs have been described as “feral or semi feral” and not good candidates for adoption. I thought the numbers was lower due to the decrease in noise from the site. That makes me wonder just how many dogs were there when TMAS was operating. I don’t know if the 10 dogs remaining are aggressive or just difficult to train and socialize.

The comments on the previous post have been informative. In addressing the narrative given out by the TMAS founder, I have to make clear that this was not an uninhabited area in 2022 when TMAS was started nor was it uninhabited in 2003 when she first arrived in the area. Tres Orejas is divided into 1/4 acre lots arranged in blocks of 10 lots with roads between the blocks. The 65 acre parcel she has tried to claim is a long and narrow rectangle that’s 5188.5′ long and 720′ wide with blocks on each side of the road in the middle according to the plat map. There are no more than 4 lots between it and neighboring properties at any point. It’s basically a narrow strip with a road in the middle that’s almost a mile long and 720 feet wide. The TMAS site is on one side of the the road at the halfway point of this strip and occupies a small portion of the whole parcel. It’s not like she was in the middle of a 65 acre square with some isolation between TMAS and the neighbors. The nearest neighbors are just a few hundred feet away and all of them were there before TMAS started operation with many being there before 2003.

Thank you everyone who commented. In general I approve comments unedited and have only left one comment from a previous post unapproved. That was due to it naming people who I felt shouldn’t be named directly along with links to their businesses in Taos and I didn’t feel right editing someone else’s comment so I just left it unapproved.

  1. According to the sheriff, there are less than 10 dogs remaining at the former TMAS site. No more than 9 and you can bypass getting a permit. Someone is caring for dogs and the barking – though we had a week or two of peace and quiet – has started up again at early morning hours and sometimes late into the evening. Sneaky tactics to run a shelter that’s not a shelter as long as the numbers are ok. We were told the animals are well caged, fed, watered, have licenses, and vaccinations. That is great for the animals and we are glad for it. The neighborhood situation is not great and we are not glad for it. The land grab situation that started all this continues in court. We look forward to this “less than the legal number of animals requiring a permit shelter non-shelter” being permanently vacated. Those who oppose our pleas during sleepless nights and days, and who oppose operations like this going through the legal process, please do build a shelter in an appropriate location following the ordinance and regulations. Thank you.

  2. Below see confirmation of charity closure on NMDoJ website, although the prior operator of this charity has been seen in Taos in recent weeks. Dogs left to bark at old TMAS site. Though less noisy then the prior 80 dogs we learned were kept there over the summer, it’s been noisy. There is an animal noise ordinance: Section 4-7 ANIMAL NOISE.
No person shall allow an Animal in their possession, custody, or control to persistently or continuously bark, howl or make noise common to its species to the extent that it causes a nuisance to Persons. This provision shall not apply to approved ASFs as defined by this Ordinance. Keep sending those emails and phone calls to Commissioner Vigil and Dpty Rita Cardenas as needed.
